When November 1 rolls around, many of us think of it as simply a holidayโ€”a day off from school, a chance to sleep in, or an opportunity to take a break from our busy schedules. But All Saints’ Day is much more than just another date on the calendarโ€“ it is a celebration with roots that run deep into our faith and history.

The holiday traces back to early Christianity, where the faithful gathered to remember martyrs who sacrificed their lives for their beliefs. Over time, the day expanded to include not just martyrs but all the saints who have lived lives of extraordinary devotion. It was Pope Gregory IV who made November 1 an official holiday in the ninth century.

Saints werenโ€™t just religious figures. They were people who faced struggles, endured hardships, and chose paths of service and compassion. Reflecting on their lives can inspire us to incorporate these values into our own routines. Whether weโ€™re lending a hand to a classmate or volunteering in our communities, weโ€™re following in the footsteps of those who dedicated their lives to service.

At St. Michaelโ€™s College (SMC), this holiday holds even greater significance as it connects to our core values of faith, excellence, and service, reminding us of the saints who lived exemplary lives dedicated to God and their communities. From our patron saint, St. Michael, to countless others, their stories inspire us to live with purpose. These salient individuals demonstrated courage, compassion, and conviction. Their journeys teach us valuable lessons about perseverance, kindness, and justice.

So, this November 1, take a moment to reflect on the lives of the saints and how they might inspire you to live with greater purpose. After all, at SMC, we are encouraged to embrace faith, excellence, and serviceโ€”and this holiday perfectly embodies that mission.
