In June 2019, St. Michael’s College of Iligan, Inc., through its SIBOL Literacy Program, conducted regular literacy sessions for young children enrolled at the GK Lafarge Day Care Center. Held every Wednesday, the program focused on strengthening early literacy and foundational learning skills during the children’s most critical stage of development.
The initiative was facilitated by Early Childhood Education and Special Education students, who embraced their roles as future teachers by dedicating their time, energy, and creativity to meaningful classroom engagement. Guided by the belief that learning should be enjoyable, fruitful, and meaningful, the student volunteers designed age-appropriate activities that encouraged curiosity, participation, and confidence among preschool learners.
To enhance the learning process, the student teachers conducted teaching demonstrations using carefully prepared instructional materials such as visual aids, storytelling tools, songs, and interactive activities. These strategies helped capture the children’s attention, supported different learning styles, and made lessons more engaging and accessible. The sessions not only reinforced basic literacy skills but also nurtured social interaction, listening skills, and positive learning behaviors.
The SIBOL Literacy Program served as a valuable experiential learning platform for the student volunteers, allowing them to apply pedagogical theories in real classroom settings while developing patience, empathy, and professional responsibility. At the same time, it provided the children of GK Lafarge with consistent educational support in a warm and caring environment.
This June 2019 activity reflected St. Michael’s College’s commitment to inclusive and quality early childhood education, demonstrating that when education is delivered with heart and purpose, it lays a strong foundation for lifelong learning.
