The 2K+1 Program of the Graduate School of St. Michael’s College of Iligan, Inc. (SMCII) formally began with a CSWD Consultation Visit on September 2, 2016, held in Dangpanan, Barangay Poblacion, during the First Semester of Academic Year 2016–2017. Organized through the Mother Ignacia Center for Social Responsibility (MICSR), this initial activity marked a significant milestone in SMCII’s commitment to structured, sustainable, and community-centered extension programs.
The consultation visit served as the foundation of the 2K+1 Program, which was envisioned as a collaborative initiative between the academe, local government units, and communities. Through dialogue with the City Social Welfare and Development (CSWD) and community stakeholders, the Graduate School sought to understand the pressing needs of the community and explore areas where graduate students and faculty could meaningfully contribute through education, capacity-building, and social development interventions.
This early engagement emphasized the importance of consultative planning, partnership, and shared responsibility in community work. It highlighted the role of graduate education not only in advancing academic excellence but also in fostering leadership, service, and social accountability among professionals. By grounding the program on real community needs, the 2K+1 initiative ensured that future activities would be responsive, inclusive, and impactful.
Through this initial consultation, the Graduate School laid the groundwork for a program that integrates academic knowledge, professional practice, and social responsibility. The 2K+1 Program stands as a testament to SMCII’s enduring mission of faith, excellence, and service, demonstrating that meaningful community transformation begins with listening, collaboration, and a shared commitment to the common good.
