Promoting Environmental Responsibility through Coastal Clean-Up

On December 12, 2016, St. Michael’s College of Iligan, Inc. (SMCII), through the Mother Ignacia Center for Social Responsibility (MICSR) in collaboration with Graduating Students, conducted a Coastal Clean-Up Activity in Barangay Santiago, Iligan City, during the Second Semester of Academic Year 2016–2017.

The activity aimed to promote environmental awareness, civic responsibility, and community participation by actively engaging students in protecting coastal areas from pollution and environmental degradation. Through collective clean-up efforts, participants helped remove waste materials along the shoreline, contributing to a cleaner, safer, and healthier coastal environment for the local community.

Beyond its immediate environmental impact, the activity served as a meaningful venue for experiential learning and values formation, particularly for graduating students preparing to transition into professional and civic life. It reinforced the importance of stewardship, accountability, and service—core values upheld by the institution under the guidance of faith, excellence, and service.

The Coastal Clean-Up also strengthened partnerships between the academe and the local community, fostering a shared sense of responsibility in caring for natural resources. By involving students in hands-on environmental action, SMCII emphasized that sustainable development is a collective effort requiring active participation from all sectors of society.
