PROMOTING ENVIRONMENTAL RESPONSIBILITY THROUGH CLEAN UP DRIVE

On August 15, 2025, the Engineering Representatives demonstrated their commitment to environmental stewardship within the St. Michael’s College school grounds. The activity aimed to promote environmental responsibility through the installation of informative signages around the campus and concrete patching of road shoulder and drainage cover. This initiative reflects the active involvement of students in advocating environmental accountability and highlights their role in preserving the environment that supports their academic and daily activities.

The College of Engineering department planned its UROCK activity on August 13 & 14, 2025, with preparations conducted a day before the activity. The school, like many buildings across the city, has been noticeably affected by irresponsible waste disposal. Improperly discarded plastics, leftover food, and paper materials negatively impact both the quality and health of the environment, particularly within the school premises. Once the school environment is affected, the consequences directly extend to the learners who utilize and depend on these spaces. Trash and litter can attract pests and harbor pathogens that spread disease. Removing waste from school grounds and community areas reduces health risks and creates safer environments for students and residents (Environmental Research Institute June 6,2025) .  This situation encouraged the College of Engineering students to contribute practical solutions by installing signages with large, highly visible lettering to serve as reminders against improper waste disposal. In addition, banners were constructed using resourceful and sustainable materials, including self-built wooden frames. The activity was further supported by the use of sweepers and dustpans to clean the canals and remove accumulated trash surrounding the exterior areas of the school. Sacks for picking up trash and cement for cracks cause “Taking care of our environment today secures our tomorrow”.

The UROCK clean-up drive improved the school environment by removing trash and repairing exterior walls. Signages raised awareness about proper waste disposal, while student participation demonstrated environmental responsibility. The activity highlighted the importance of a clean campus and the role of students as stewards of their surroundings.
