BASAHANG MAAASAHAN: Empowering Pantawid Beneficiaries through Rag Skills Training

On March 10, 2017, St. Michael’s College of Iligan, Inc. (SMCII), through the Mother Ignacia Center for Social Responsibility (MICSR) and the U-ROCK Program, successfully conducted a Rag Skills Training for DSWD Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps) beneficiaries in the Municipality of Baroy, Lanao del Norte, in partnership with the Department of Social Welfare and Development Region X.

The whole-day training, held from 7:00 AM to 5:30 PM, aimed to equip beneficiaries—primarily women—with practical livelihood skills that can generate sustainable income for their families. The session was facilitated by Mr. Korsiney N. Cabasis, MBA, Director of MICSR, and Dr. Ave Z. Danganan, Dean of the College of Business Administration, with the support of student volunteers.

The activity began with an orientation led by Dr. Ave Z. Danganan, emphasizing the importance of skills development, discipline, and entrepreneurship as pathways out of poverty. Participants were then guided through hands-on rag-making processes, learning how discarded materials can be transformed into useful and marketable products. The training not only transferred technical skills but also instilled confidence, self-worth, and hope among the Pantawid beneficiaries.

Beyond skills training, the activity highlighted the value of resourcefulness and environmental responsibility, showing how recycling and upcycling can contribute to both household income and environmental protection. The involvement of students further strengthened the culture of volunteerism and socially engaged learning, allowing them to witness how business knowledge and community service can intersect for meaningful impact.

This initiative reflects SMCII’s mission of faith, excellence, and service, demonstrating a strong commitment to inclusive development and community empowerment through education and livelihood support.
