BASAHANG MAAASAHAN: Empowering Communities through Rag Skills Training in Tangcal, Lanao del Norte

On April 20, 2017, St. Michael’s College of Iligan, Inc. (SMCII), through the Mother Ignacia Center for Social Responsibility (MICSR) and the U-ROCK Program, conducted a Rag Skills Training for DSWD beneficiaries in the Municipality of Tangcal, Lanao del Norte, during Academic Year 2016–2017. The activity was implemented in partnership with the Department of Social Welfare and Development Region X.

Facilitated by Mr. Korsiney N. Cabasis, MBA, Director of MICSR, and Dr. Ave Z. Danganan, Dean of the College of Business Administration, the whole-day training aimed to equip Pantawid beneficiaries—particularly women—with practical livelihood skills that can generate income and support family sustainability. Participants were trained in rag-making techniques using recycled materials, promoting both economic productivity and environmental responsibility.

Student volunteers supported the facilitators throughout the activity, reinforcing a culture of volunteerism and service-learning. The training not only transferred technical skills but also fostered confidence, self-reliance, and hope among the beneficiaries, highlighting the importance of education and partnership in community development.

This initiative reflects SMCII’s commitment to faith, excellence, and service, and demonstrates how academic expertise can be translated into meaningful community empowerment.
