On December 3, 2017, St. Michael’s College of Iligan, Inc. (SMCII), through the Mother Ignacia Center for Social Responsibility (MICSR), in collaboration with the College of Nursing (CON), College of Commerce (COC), College of Hotel and Restaurant Management (CHRM), and the College of Engineering and Computer Studies (CECS), conducted the Third Sandayong sa Gugma for Senior Citizens and Sendong Survivors at the SMC Gymnasium, during the Second Semester of Academic Year 2016–2017.
The activity was dedicated to senior citizens, particularly survivors of Tropical Storm Sendong, recognizing their resilience, life stories, and invaluable contribution to the community. A total of 102 senior citizens from Barangay Santiago and nearby communities participated in the gathering, which was marked by warmth, fellowship, and shared joy.
Sandayong sa Gugma provided a safe and welcoming space where senior citizens were honored through meaningful interaction, care initiatives, and community celebration. The program fostered a sense of belonging and emotional well-being, affirming that the elderly remain an integral and valued part of society. Participating colleges contributed their expertise and service, ensuring a holistic and compassionate approach to care and engagement.
This initiative reflects SMCII’s mission of faith, excellence, and service, embodying deep respect for human dignity and solidarity with vulnerable sectors. It also served as a venue for student volunteers to develop empathy, social awareness, and a deeper appreciation of intergenerational responsibility.
The activity aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-Being) by promoting emotional and social wellness among senior citizens; SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities) by prioritizing vulnerable populations; SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities) by fostering inclusive and age-friendly spaces; and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals) through inter-college collaboration and community partnership.Through Sandayong sa Gugma, SMCII reaffirmed its commitment to compassion, inclusivity, and community solidarity, demonstrating that genuine service honors the past, cares for the present, and strengthens hope for the future.
