Empowering Women, Empowering Communities: NSTP Students Lead Women’s Month Service at SMCII

Each year, St. Michael’s College of Iligan, Inc. strengthens its commitment to social responsibility, gender equality, and community empowerment through meaningful initiatives that reflect the values of Faith, Excellence, and Service. On March 10, 2024, the College of Business Administration and Accountancy (CBAA), in collaboration with the NSTP students, organized an impactful Women’s Month outreach in Tambacan, Iligan City. Designed to uphold inclusivity and promote gender-responsive advocacy, the activity brought together student leaders, NSTP volunteers, and community members in support of the national theme “WE for Gender Equality and an Inclusive Society.”

This initiative served as a platform not only to celebrate Women’s Month but also to reinforce the vital role of women in shaping families, communities, and the nation. It also aligned with SMC’s mission of forming morally grounded, socially responsive, and service-driven youth leaders prepared to address real social issues with compassion and integrity.

Advancing Gender Equality and Social Inclusion

During the event themed “WE for Gender Equality and an Inclusive Society” under the national banner “Babae sa Lahat ng Sektor, Aangat ang Bukas sa Bagong Pilipinas,” NSTP students actively engaged in conversations and service that uplift women in the community. Their involvement highlights the role of youth as catalysts for SDG 5 (Gender Equality) and SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities)—breaking barriers, raising awareness, and creating inclusive spaces for all.

These activities nurture student understanding of gender sensitivity, respect, and inclusiveness, further supporting SDG 4 (Quality Education) through values-driven experiential learning.

A Commitment to Community-Centered CSR

True to SMC’s CSR identity, this outreach demonstrated how education extends beyond the classroom. Students actively participated in community engagement, amplifying the school’s mission of forming socially responsible leaders who serve with purpose.

The presence of the college dean, Dr. Ave Z. Danganan, also emphasized the institution’s leadership in advocating for equitable opportunities and meaningful local partnerships.

Inclusivity, Safety, and Intellectual Responsibility

SMC upholds the principles of inclusion, ethical conduct, and intellectual property. All program materials, photos, and documentation honor the dignity and privacy of individuals, ensuring that the stories shared promote empowerment, not exploitation.

The event also fostered a safe space for diverse voices—affirming that every woman, regardless of age or background, deserves to be heard, valued, and celebrated.

Faith in Action: Inspired by Mother Mary

At its heart, this outreach embodied Catholic social teachings—service to the marginalized, compassion for the vulnerable, and respect for human dignity.
Guided by the tender strength of Mother Mary, students served with humility and love, embodying the mission of SMC to form individuals who honor God through service to others.

Impact on the Michaelite Community

The Women’s Month celebration stands as a testament to SMC’s continuous effort to build a sustainable, inclusive, and socially responsible campus. By empowering students to lead activities aligned with SDGs and Catholic values, SMC strengthens its role as a transformative institution committed to nation-building and character formation.

Through this initiative, our NSTP students learned that service is not only an academic obligation—it is a calling to uplift communities and advocate for justice, equality, and compassion.
