Learning by Immersion: CBAA Students Explore Water Purification Excellence at Nature’s Spring

Continuing its steadfast commitment to holistic education and sustainable development, St. Michael’s College of Iligan, Inc., through the College of Business Administration and Accountancy (CBAA), organized an enriching Educational Tour at Nature’s Spring on April 19, 2024. Undergraduate and graduate students embarked on an industry-based learning experience designed to deepen their understanding of water purification processes, responsible production, and the operational realities of a leading company in the Philippine beverage sector. Guided by professional associates from Nature’s Spring, the activity aimed to bridge theoretical knowledge with real-world application, strengthening the students’ competence in business operations, quality control, and environmental management.

This learning tour is a vital part of SMC’s mission to nurture future professionals who are not only competent in business disciplines but also conscious of environmental stewardship and ethical decision-making. Through this firsthand experience, students witnessed how modern industries uphold public health, sustainability, and regulatory compliance.

Understanding the Science of Water Purification (SDG 6: Clean Water and Sanitation)

One of the core objectives of the tour was to provide students with an in-depth understanding of the rigorous processes behind producing safe, potable drinking water. The Nature’s Spring team walked students through the 12-stage purification system, which includes:

  • Source Water Collection
  • Filtration and Microfiltration
  • Activated Carbon Treatment
  • Reverse Osmosis
  • Ion Exchange
  • UV Treatment
  • Ozonation
  • Sanitized Bottling Procedures

Each stage was carefully presented and explained, allowing students to appreciate how these technologies ensure compliance with BFAD and Philippine National Standards for bottled water. This direct exposure supports SDG 6, which aims to ensure clean water and sanitation for all by emphasizing the role of safe water production in protecting community health.

Students realized that behind every bottle of safe, purified water lies a highly regulated system designed to eliminate contaminants, ensure product safety, and protect public well-being. Such awareness prepares future business professionals to value quality assurance, compliance standards, and consumer safety.

Responsible Consumption, Production, and Environmental Ethics (SDG 12)

The tour also aligned strongly with SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production, as students gained insight into the environmental responsibilities that come with large-scale beverage production. Nature’s Spring demonstrated how it minimizes waste, monitors water sourcing, manages energy use, and adheres to responsible production protocols.

Students were introduced to:

  • Sustainable waste management practices
  • Plastic reduction efforts
  • Water resource conservation
  • Recycling initiatives
  • Community outreach projects
  • Compliance with environmental regulations

This portion of the tour encouraged future marketers, entrepreneurs, and managers to consider sustainability as a core business principle rather than an optional add-on. They learned that companies must balance profitability with environmental consciousness, ethical responsibility, and accountability to communities.

This deeper understanding reinforces CBAA’s mission of forming business graduates who are capable of leading industries towards sustainability rather than exploitation.

A Living Example of Quality Education (SDG 4)

Beyond technical processes, the tour exemplified SDG 4: Quality Education, providing students with experiential learning that extended far beyond classroom walls. They were able to:

Observe real-world operations
Engage with industry professionals
Connect lessons from business, economics, and management
Develop curiosity and deeper understanding
Ask critical questions on quality, ethics, and sustainability

Experiential learning is essential for preparing students to become adaptive, analytical, and socially responsible professionals. Nature’s Spring served as a dynamic learning environment where theories from operations management, quality control, supply chain, marketing, and CSR converged into a practical example.

The activity also allowed graduate students to contextualize research topics related to environmental sustainability, production efficiency, and consumer behavior.

Moral Responsibility and Stewardship of Creation

As a Catholic institution, St. Michael’s College anchors academic formation within the moral teachings of the Church. This educational tour illustrated the responsibility humans bear as stewards of creation — a value strongly inspired by Mother Mary’s humility and Christ’s call to care for the earth.

Students reflected on questions such as:

  • How can businesses protect natural resources?
  • How do we balance profit with ethical environmental practices?
  • What is our responsibility as future leaders toward creation?

Such reflections emphasize that business education at SMC is not solely about economic gain; it is about forming leaders who are moral, compassionate, and respectful of both people and the planet.

Strengthening Industry Awareness and Career Readiness

Finally, the tour enhanced students’ career readiness by giving them a closer look at industry standards and workforce expectations. They observed:

  • Professional workplace discipline
  • Safety protocols
  • Production team coordination
  • Roles in logistics and quality assurance
  • How business functions merge to create one cohesive operation

Seeing the workplace in action inspired many students to envision their future roles and responsibilities in various business sectors.

Shaping Future Leaders Through Real-World Exposure

The Nature’s Spring Educational Tour proved to be a meaningful milestone in the students’ academic journey. Through firsthand exposure, industry interaction, and value-reflective learning, students strengthened their understanding of sustainability, quality, and ethical stewardship. The tour reaffirmed St. Michael’s College’s mission to cultivate graduates who are knowledgeable, socially responsible, faith-driven, and committed to contributing positively to society.
