Maliit na Sentimo, Malaking Halaga: Inspiring Financial Wisdom and Values through Storytelling

On November 22, 2024, the Financial Management students from the College of Business Administration and Accountancy (CBAA) of St. Michael’s College, Iligan City, carried out a heartwarming two-day storytelling activity in Barangay Tipanoy, reaching out to three different Day Care Centers. The project, titled “Maliit na Sentimo, Malaking Halaga: Kwento ng Kabutihan at Kaalaman,” formed part of their Service Learning activity under the Business Ethics subject and supported the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) coin recirculation advocacy.

Across the three centers, the students engaged a total of 89 young learners—22 from Day Care Center 1, 39 from Day Care Center 2, and 28 from Day Care Center 3. Each storytelling session brought to life the tale of “Ang Value ni Sentimo,” a creative story about a small coin that learned its true worth and the power of small contributions. The children were captivated as they discovered that every centavo, though tiny, holds a big purpose in the world of savings, generosity, and shared responsibility.

Throughout the two-day activity, the Financial Management students worked hand in hand to facilitate storytelling, organize interactive games, and lead short reflection activities. They incorporated songs, drawing exercises, and role-plays that helped the children understand financial values in a fun and engaging way. The classrooms were filled with laughter and curiosity as the children eagerly participated in each activity.

Beyond financial awareness, the sessions also aimed to teach kindness, honesty, and the importance of helping others—values that resonate deeply with the college’s core principles of faith, excellence, and service. The project not only brought joy to the children but also gave the college students a meaningful opportunity to apply ethical concepts from their course in a real-world setting.

The success of the activity was evident in the enthusiasm of both the learners and facilitators. Through this storytelling initiative, the CBAA students realized that education is not limited to lectures and exams but can become a living expression of compassion and civic responsibility. The simple message of a humble coin became a powerful reminder that small actions, when done with sincerity, can create a ripple of positive change.

Indeed, “Maliit na Sentimo, Malaking Halaga: Kwento ng Kabutihan at Kaalaman” was more than just a storytelling event—it was a celebration of values, learning, and community connection. By reaching 89 young learners across three centers, the CBAA students of St. Michael’s College proved that even the smallest effort, like the smallest coin, carries immeasurable worth when shared for the good of others.
